As the home of the Official Shark Beauty, The Women’s Champions Classic returned to Brooklyn on Saturday, December 20th, at the Barclays Center and featured four of the best women’s college basketball teams: the University of Connecticut, the University of Iowa, the University of Louisville, and the University of Tennessee.

In the first match-up, Louisville defeated Tennessee with an 89-65 victory. Senior forward, Laura Ziegler from Louisville, was named State Farm’s Assist Leader of the game with 6 assists, 8 rebounds, and 10 points. Tajanna Roberts led the team with a solid 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Imari Berry clocked in a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Louisville will resume game action at home against SMU on Thursday, January 1st.

In the second-match up, UConn defeated Iowa with a 90-64 victory and dominated the game from the first whistle.

It doesn’t matter which 5 players are on the court at any given time; the chemistry between the Huskies is undeniable. “We play unselfish basketball, it’s a 5-person game when we are on the court”, Fudd stated.

The Huskies played THEIR game defensively and offensively. The team does an excellent job at showcasing their talent and sharing the ball. At the half, the Huskies were up by 11 but turned it up a notch in the 3rd and 4th quarters to seal the deal. Azzi Fudd was named State Farm’s Power Player of the game with 27 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds. Her three-point range and ability to ditch to players when they are under the basket made her a true game-changer in this match-up.

This year, Junior guard KK Arnold has stepped up to the plate and has proven why she deserves to be on the court. Arnold has a huge shine off the court, and when it’s game time, she can create magic. Arnold was named State Farm’s Assist Leader of the game with 6 assists, 7 points, and 2 rebounds. “This year I am understanding my pace and what I need to do to make plays happen”, stated Arnold.

Another Huskie showstopper was Sarah Strong. She dominated the boards with 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Strong’s ability to make buckets in the post and on the three-point line makes her dangerous going up against any team. She is a candidate for National Player of the Year, and it’s just the beginning of the season. Head Coach Geno Auriemma stated, “Sarah Strong has a halo over her, not in a religious way, but there is an aura to her. Everything she does seems to feel like the game is in her soul”.

UConn will resume game action on Tuesday, December 23rd, at Butler.
